Reflections on a birthday

birthday cakeToday, is my 45th birthday.  I reflect on my life and how things have changed over the last five and ten years and am very blessed to be in the position we are.  My wife and I cleared out some of my old studio equipment yesterday and I found some interesting items from old pictures and memory items to cassette tapes I would spend hours creating when I was DJ-ing more than 20 years ago.  Among those items was a scribbled ‘goals’ list I must have begun to create listening to the many self-help courses I have studied.  There is no date but I know it is about six years old because one of the goals within one year was “have another baby”.  It was obviously created before my daughter now six, was born.

I bring this up because the list has about 25 or 30 items on it; not all material items either…many just about being a better person and learning how to take care of my family and friends.  Some items were specific to the industry in which I was part of for my entire life (remixing Britney Spears) and it was very cool to see how many of them ACTUALLY came to be.

It definitely proves to me one thing.  Writing down goals works.  TRUE goals…the ones from the heart.  It also proves they may take more time than initially thought as a lot of them written to complete in three years or less I recently accomplished in only the last two years.

But I think the most revealing to me was how those goals still hold true to me today.  It reveals to me how much thought and energy I put into this list because it was not all about material items.

It is interesting listening to friends and family talk about what is important to them…and they don’t even realize they are doing it.  You will be very surprised to listen between the lines when you are engaged in a conversation next time.  By listening, you can see the true soul of that person. It’s also interesting to know many of my new friends and investment colleages share the same perception about why it is people continue to stay put and avoid any advancement in their lives.

I don’t know why that is, but I personally love looking back at decisions I have made specifically in the last two years that have brought me here.  Some were not great decisions but I’m still standing and further ahead because of them.

Am I the ‘elder’ in whom you should listen???  I don’t know.
