Real Estate Success Advice Pt 3 – Be Happy for Someone Else

In this third installment of real estate success advice, I want to share how amazing it is to be on the giving side and sharing happiness with someone else.

I’m using the word “success” very loosely because everyone sees it differently.

It doesn’t necessarily mean you have a million dollars in the bank.

The Best Real Estate Success Advice I Have

I have learned to (and encourage YOU to do the same) celebrate even the smallest inspirations, decisions and ACTIONS as success.

Let me ask you this:

Why is it so important to be happy for others’ success?   Zig Ziglar said “You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”

That may seem like a demoralized statement when you first read it but truly it is not.

To me, this says “THINK about others first, about how you can help them and in return you will find you have helped yourself”.

Let’s face it; we ALL want financial freedom and success right?  But what has society taught you about achieving that?

What MEASURES your success in the eyes of society and what values are you avoiding to attain it?

When Do You Help Someone Else?

Let’s say you know of a great promotion at work, you are really NOT the best candidate for the job but you want to move up & make more money…in other words you want to be more successful.

At the same time, you know there is someone else better suited for the position…what do you do?

Do you go after the promotion anyway, or do you step aside and HELP the other person get the position?  Tough one huh?

Another example is with Real Estate investing – I can’t count how  many times a new investor will ask me why I’m “revealing” all my “secrets” about an area in which I invest. “Aren’t you afraid other investors will steal all the deals?”

Not at all.

Here’s another piece of real estate success advice:   there is so much for everyone to share.

Secondly I didn’t know about these areas or deals unless SOMEONE ELSE shared THEIR knowledge and secrets with ME!!

So let’s jump back to the promotion example for a moment.

In both situations I would guess that most people go after the promotion or keep all the information to themselves.  “Screw it, I’ve worked hard all my life and I deserve this”.  Maybe you do, maybe you don’t.  But I would argue if that is your reasoning, you are ignoring core values that have made people successful.

Two of those core values  (and there are many more) are authenticity & happiness.

Are you truly genuine about helping others?  Are you REALLY happy for someone when THEY get the deal and you don’t?

I’ll confess something to you:

I did have trouble feeling happy for anyone else other than me; what a selfish place to live.

How many times have you heard someone say “I’m happy for them” or maybe even you’ve said it?

ARE YOU?  Or is it just the “right thing to say”?

The difference today is that I KNOW I AM HAPPY for other people.  I can’t prove that to you, but I FEEL deep in my soul the difference between “jealousy” and “happiness” for someone else.

It’s such a better place to live when you are sharing in the happiness of others’ success.

Here’s another confession:

In the last month or so with my help and so many other people I can’t begin to list, my wife’s business (SuiteDesign) has accomplished a LOT and has been at the forefront of our lives.

If this was a five years ago, I probably would have been jealous of her success.

Isn’t that sad?

That’s really hard to admit; and I’m ashamed I would have felt that, but I’m telling you because it’s true.

I’m also admitting this because I can’t even IMAGINE feeling that way TODAY.

It’s a huge growth for me, yet so many people live like that with their spouse, their friends and colleagues.

If they just realize and learn to be genuinely happy for someone else, they have a better chance to become successful.  It just comes down to how they MEASURE that success!
