Characteristics of a Successful Real Estate Investor

I was thinking about the characteristics of a successful real estate investor today…

But it’s not what you think.

Because there are certain characteristics of a successful real estate investor we can “track”, and some we can’t.

I’m going to talk about those we can’t today.

Because today is one of those ‘bitter-sweet’ days.

It’s a day where I realize even more I can’t be someone I’m not even if I tried.  I can’t even hide emotions it seems –

It’s because I am slowly coming off a ‘high’ from the Real Estate Investment Network workshop last night in which my wife from SuiteDesign was one of the presenters to more than three hundred members.

I suppose my failed attempt at being calm and collected didn’t work.  My excitement or anxiety obviously was apparent because for the first half of the evening my ‘peeps’ were telling me “it’s cool, relax, she’s fine.”

Was I THAT obvious???

I laugh this morning because I LOVE the fact my emotions show on my face & it’s why I never will and never have played poker.

I would lose everything 🙂 ;

I can’t “bluff” because it will show up in my face, my voice and my body language.

I remember when I was a kid training to be a magician (yes I had that bug for about two years) I had trouble fooling people and ‘diverting’ their attention.  “Damn” I thought “I’m never going to be able to have a straight face to fool anyone.

Who would have thought years later this ‘negative’ is actually a ‘positive’ when you’re looking at the characteristics of a successful real estate investor?

Why these are important characteristics of a successful real estate investor

I believe the reason I have a hard time lying to people is because I have the core value of Authenticity.

That means I tell things like it is – hide nothing and don’t try to BS anyone.

Those to me, are important characteristics of a successful real estate investor.

I accept when my authenticity becomes a filter also removing people whom choose not to like me.  I bring this authenticity everywhere I go, especially to joint venture partners who ask about investing with me.

I LOVE being who I am and feeding off my true core values: Achievement, Independence, Authenticity, Celebrity, and Competence. I learned  about core values from Greg Habstritt and he continues to be an influential structure in my life.

As I said earlier, I’m reflecting on many things today because nine years ago today I lost my father.  He was the cornerstone to my being and helped me develop my core values.  I never really had a chance to tell him that because I was probably too selfish and hid these values from everyone.  I miss him dearly but the lessons I have learned to identify although hurtful, are helping me succeed today.

I focus on the positives to why he had to leave us so early and when I say this to people they sometimes get the wrong idea. I of course wish I could see the joy on his face with our success, but I can’t change what has happened, although I can change how I live the future.

What I’ve learned from regret

Last night was FILLED with opportunity “attracted” to both my wife and I and I purely believe my father was somehow nudging those openings our way.

This is my personal spiritual belief and helps me attach yet another reason why he is not with us.  However I do not discount A LOT of this attraction has to do with the respect I surely have for people.  The tragic event of losing my father will always remind me to LET EVERYONE KNOW my appreciation while I have the chance.

I don’t want to regret not telling someone a simple ‘thank you’.

If you are to succeed in Real Estate investing, or anything for that matter…YOU HAVE TO BE AUTHENTIC and GRATEFUL to start.  If not, don’t involve yourself with other people and their money.

If choose to be anything else other than genuine, play poker. It’s a gamble like speculative real estate investing and once in a while you could get lucky and hit the jackpot.  But keep in mind what you needed to do to ‘win’.

When today ends, my reflection will change and the next post will be something else, but what will always be a constant is the gratitude for the people and what I have in my life.

To you who know me, work with me, support and follow me – THANK YOU from the depths of my heart.  I do not take any one of you for granted.  I realize how important every one of you is even if you are a just taking ten minutes to read this blog…you are an integral part of my growth and learn more about the characteristics of a successful real estate investor because it gives me an outlet to share what I have learned and in some way, help you and others at the same time.
