This weekend I was asked “Joe, how do you know all this stuff?”
My answer was simple: “I keep training – I never put a ceiling on my learning”
This past Saturday, my business partner Mike Gillespie and I spent the entire day with our Real Estate business coaching clients in a private personal mastermind session.
It’s a very powerful event that extends the personal one-on-one coaching we do by bringing them into a ‘closed room’ so we all focus on and help one another build our business and cut through the barriers in our personal and professional lives. ( In fact, we also have this same environment set up for you if you are not yet a coaching client but want to experience how a day mastermind feels and what it can do for you : here’s the link)
The reason a mastermind like this is so powerful is because we adapt to whatever is going on in their lives and business and it’s amazing how much can come out in a day like that … because it’s NOT just about giving another exercise or template, the learning spreads into many areas.
That’s why my client pulled me aside to ask me how I “KNOW all this stuff”
I know a lot of it because I’m constantly feeding my brain, I’m re-visiting material I’ve absorbed … and more importantly, I’ve LIVED it for my entire life in all my businesses. With that much experience and having the mindset that I need to continuously learn more, I help others speed up their process with their real estate businesses.
For you and your Real Estate business, it’s so important point to remember to recall & re-visit the books and home study courses you more than likely sped through the first time around because you were excited to get out there. Repetition as you know, is the mother of all skill.
Be Open To Change
Once you are in the habit of going back and reviewing material, keep your mind fresh with new, pertinent information – don’t just clutter your brain with crap – have a focus and concentrate on that particular information. In my own personal experience, I believed I knew everything there was to know about ‘marketing’ because “I’ve done it for more than 20 years” but obviously the world changes and there was no real ‘internet’ when I was a champion marketer in the 80’s.
If you don’t change and adapt, you will be left back – period.
Don’t Forget How You Got There
In so many instances, successful entrepreneurs, investors, and so on, forget how they got there … they believe there is nothing left to learn, and this is a dangerous spot to live – it’s that proverbial ‘ceiling’ I talked about earlier.
Unfortunately, this happens to a lot of Real Estate investors and just about every business entrepreneur. Ask me how I know this. But on the other hand I ALSO talk with many ‘veterans’ that want to ‘blow past’ that ceiling because they recognize exactly what I’m talking about here! Kudos to them, I trust that they’ll constantly be successful because they realize they need help, and there’s always something to learn.
I can parallel this with a short story: when I was a teenager and 7 years into my Kung-Fu training I thought I was a hero … that I basically knew it all – when my trainer told me “Joe, you’re good … I’ll admit that, but there’s always someone better than you” he taught me a valuable life lesson I’ll never forget.
With his voice implanted in my brain, I live with that mentality in my business to this day. It’s also why I had to remind myself of this JUST LAST YEAR when again, I thought I knew everything in business and ignored what a business coach could do for ME.
The difference in MY business came when I stepped back and listened to my own advice … there is ALWAYS someone better than me and I have ‘blown through my own ceiling’ because I walked into that space. I’ll NEVER have a ceiling limit again and I hope you don’t either!
