Most people have this backwards. I sure did for a HUGE portion of my life. I discovered that “sacrificing” to build my business was destructive. It completely severed me from my life. It removed me from present moments that I would later regret but at the time thought it was ‘worth it’.
Today, I constantly see people struggle
and bang their heads against the wall
wondering how they can get past the obstacles. They continue to search for new tactics and strategies. They spend time away from family at workshops and seminars.
Worse, they spend time away from THEMSELVES.
We ALL “want” a better life. We all want success, wealth and freedom. And although there are A LOT of dreamers & non-action takers in the world, there’s the other side of the coin as well.
It’s the side where I came from.
It’s where business, work, career, opportunity CONSUME you. It’s where we are totally OK with giving up shit to get better shit.
This is the place where we spend hours, days, weeks and years SEEKING that perfect information.
This is where many of our lives fall apart right in front of us.
It’s the place where the people in our lives who are truly the most important are ignored, taken for granted & forgotten.
Don’t take this the wrong way…I think education is important.
But I think LIFE is WAY more important.
But I never REALLY thought that way before. 40 years of my life was dedicated to anything else BUT life. Even though I convinced myself otherwise.
Today is a day where I have learned another lesson. A sad lesson, but an important one.
As I enjoyed the early morning sunshine in my PJs out on the driveway while everyone scattered off to work (yea, I don’t care what anyone thinks) my neighbour across the street from me stopped over to tell me his wife passed away last night.
In shock, I had nothing to say.
This woman could not have been more than 50.
What was amazingly incredible was that I just saw her a few weeks ago. She still came out and asked me how I was as we were putting our trash out.
She showed no signs of being sick. I imagine that she kept this attitude up until the moment she passed on.
It’s just my observation of her because of what she brought to our community.
I will miss her.
Why am I writing this? First, because I don’t edit what’s in my heart when I write. I hope that you respect me for that. It’s my understanding why people come back to read my stuff and listen to me speak.
It doesn’t please everyone, but I’m ok with that.
The reason I’m writing this is because it’s just another reason why we HAVE to consider what we are doing in our lives and our businesses.
We hear about this every day. Sometimes it happens very close to us. But do we listen to the message? 9 times out of 10 we don’t.
I did. Eight years ago.
When my dad was “told” by Cancer that he had three years to now “live”, I got it.
That message will never leave me. It’s part of what DRIVES me to push entrepreneurs like you so hard AWAY from all the bullshit and get real. Get SO real that you start injecting the RIGHT stuff into your business and your life. Most people just read this or hear me speak about it and politely nod their heads but just move on.
I know it because I did it for years too.
Today, that message, my mission hit me in the gut again.
It makes me want to SHOUT LOUDER to you so YOU get it.
Sacrifice for your business? Bullshit. That mentality is old school my friend. I know it because I lived it and now I’m on the other side.
What are you GIVING up for your “business”. What are you giving up for you “busyness”? read that last one again.
My mission and passion is to help you; however that may be.
Do you know why? Because I’ve watch too many dreams DIE. I’ve watched relationships die. I’ve watch PEOPLE die – and that’s the reality.
Too heavy for today?
That’s how FAST my week changed with the news of one of the most respectful, beautiful, caring human beings was taken from us.
Am I angry? Yea.
Can I do something about it? I can. Maybe not directly for my friend and neighbour, but I can change other’s worlds with what I know to help them LIVE.
So go build your business, but build it AROUND your life – not the other way around. Do not, EVER, let it consume you.
