People who do not succeed have one distinguishing characteristic in common. They all have the reasons for failure and great explanations why they lack achievement. I used to be one of these people because I can admit to every single one of these:
- IF I had the money…
- IF I only had time…
- IF I had been given the chance…
- IF I were only younger…
- IF I didn’t have a wife and family…
- IF times were better…
- IF I now had the chance…
- IF I could “meet the right people”…
- IF I could just get started…
- IF I only had someone to help me…
- IF I were sure of myself…
- IF I could just get a “break”…
- IF I only knew how…
- IF I had the right education…
- IF I could only get out of debt…
Whew…I’ve not even scratched the surface here but you get the idea. How about you, can you relate to any or maybe ALL of those?
Reading that list, I challenge you to think of the reasons you are comfortable with saying to explain why you are not successful.
Once you realize what those reasons are, you can choose to continue using them, or throw them out once and for all.
There is another uncomfortable commonality this list possesses; those reasons (and more) are uttered by people near and at the end of their lives. They regretfully look back at what they “could” have done and when your mind begins to link that to your own pain and how you can change that end result, you will find that you begin to think and form a habit around the #1 quality successful people have learned.
The #1 Quality of Successful People
The opposite of that list is the reason others are successful. In other words, people who do this ONE habit over and over again are simply more successful and define their lives:
THEY DECIDE.
When it comes right down to it … really, the choice IS yours and what you have decided or ignored up to now has brought you to where you are. There is no denying that statement. It applies to you if you are successful and it applies to you if you are not – it suffices even if you are on you way to success. The point is, that MOST people who use the limiting alibis of “IF I…” do not decide – they “think about it”.
When I speak to most Real Estate entrepreneurs about coaching them and bringing them to the next level in their business, they are waiting for me to tell them something no-one has said ever before. They are waiting for the MAGIC FORMULA that answers and satisfys all of their IF questions.
But the truth is … all they need to do is DECIDE … decide that where they are is NOT where they want to be. SOME do, MOST don’t.
And, it’s the same for you because success is found behind your decisions. No… I did NOT SAY, your next decision, but who knows; maybe it is !! What this truly means is when you make a choice, you will learn from it… whether it was a good choice or a bad one. After that, guess what, you make ANOTHER decision and sooner or later, YOU are the one telling the story about how that ONE choice made you.
THAT is why decision-habit people are leaders & why they can tell you stories about “being there”, “doing that”. Their experience is nothing that can be taught in a book. Successful people don’t begin their sentences with “IF I…” they begin with “Let’s see what happens when…”
Change Your Mindset From IF to Let’s See What
Lastly, I can give you one tip on your transformation from an IF person to a Let’s See person. Copy this quote by Napoleon Hill from Think and Grow Rich:
“Those who reach decisions promptly and definitely know what they want, and generally get it. The leaders in every walk of life decide quickly and firmly. That is the major reason they are leaders.”
When you are faced with a decision and you are about to fall back to your IF excuse, read that aloud … then, make your decision and never look back.
How do you feel? What has held you back? Tell me your IF reason and let the world know you are ready to change it up! Give me some feedback below!!!
Excellent blog and great post
